Job Summary: This position is responsible for operating a variety of heavy road maintenance and construction equipment in support of the Public Works Road Department.
Job Duties:
- Operates a variety of heavy equipment used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of county roads, drainage systems, and rights-of-way, including excavator, skid steer, loader, grader, grade-all, tractor, dozer, asphalt roller, dump truck, chipper, etc.
- Inspects equipment prior to use to ensure that it is in proper operating condition; checks brakes, mirrors, lights, wipers, belts, hoses, air pressure, fluid levels, etc.
- Performs equipment maintenance duties such as lubricating, greasing, and checking air, oil, gas, and other fluids
- Loads dump trucks and hauls sand, dirt, clay, asphalt, and other materials to work sites; transports equipment to work sites
- Flags traffic at work sites as needed
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools
- Installs pipes and culverts
- Clears debris from roads and rights-of-way
- Patches and paves roadways
- Cuts trees; removes storm debris
- Cleans culverts and storm drains
- Installs and maintains emergency barricades at flooded areas or emergency sites
- Adjusts work assignments and schedules in the event of an emergency to participate in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery activities as needed
- Subject to on-call after hours
- Performs related duties
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- More than three years of related experience required
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record: Class B CDL required; Class A preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of how to operate and perform minor maintenance on assigned equipment
- Knowledge of department and safety rules and regulations
- Knowledge of county geography, including streets and rights-of-way
- Skill in defensive driving techniques
- Skill in operating a variety of heavy and light equipment
- Skill in using various hand and power tools
- Skill in performing road construction and maintenance duties
- Skill in oral and written communication
