Job Summary:
This position is responsible for assisting with fire suppression, emergency rescue, and other emergency response duties. An incumbent in this position may be designated Firefighter II.
Job Duties:
- Responds to fire alarms, traffic accidents, medical emergencies, rescue calls, and other emergencies as a member of a fire and rescue team
- Selects hose nozzle, depending on type of fire, and directs stream of water or chemicals into fire.
- Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings to rescue individuals from burning buildings
- Creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance
- Performs search and rescue operations
- Assists in administering emergency medical treatment
- Communicates with superior officers and other Firefighters during emergency calls by portable two-way radio and other communication devices
- Contains, controls, and decontaminates hazardous materials spills as certified
- Performs a variety of salvage and clean-up operations, including removing water, chemicals, and debris as certified
- Supports inspections of buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances
- Makes presentations on fire safety, burn prevention, and fire prevention to schools and community groups
- Maintains apparatus, buildings, equipment, grounds, and hydrants
- Drives and operates firefighting vehicles and equipment as certified (only as a relief driver)
- Assists with fire inspections and pre-fire planning
- Assists with hose, hydrant, pump, and other equipment tests
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- No experience requirements
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
- Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act
- Ability to complete a physical abilities test
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures
- Knowledge of fire and emergency response principles, techniques, equipment, and standards
- Knowledge of emergency medical care principles, practices, and protocols
- Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs
- Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions
- Skill in the preparation of clear reports
- Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment
- Skill in the efficient and effective response to fire and other emergency situations
